Students of American International University of Bangladesh (AIUB) and South East University (SEU) Thursday locked in a clash over a trifling matter and vandalised at least 15 vehicles on Kamal Ataturk Avenue in the city’s Banani area.

Police and witnesses said the clash took place between the students of AIUB and SEU as the security personnel of SEU allegedly insulted a girl student of AIUB at about 12noon. The AIUB girl student came with her boyfriend from SEU. But they were barred from entering the SEU campus by the security guards.

When the news spread, colleagues of the girl student came in and started staging demonstration to protest against the move of the SEU’s security personnel.

At one stage of the demonstration, the SEU students chased the AIUB students with sticks, forcing AIUB students to throw brickbats that turned the area into a battlefield.

During the chase and counter-chase, students of both the private universities damaged some vehicles creating panic among the passerby.

Traffic movement on Kamal Ataturk Avenue and its adjacent areas was seriously disrupted for over two hours causing untold sufferings to the people. A police official of Gulshan police station told FE that at least 15 cars were damaged during the clash.

Some five students of both the education institutions were injured in the clash. They were later given first aid in different clinics. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Authorities of SEU alleged that the angry students of AIUB also ransacked some classrooms and windowpanes, which was denied by the AIUB authorities.
